Institutional

BROWN UNIVERSITY, JOHN HAY LIBRARYBuilt in 1910 by Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge, the John Hay Library was Brown University’s first dedicated library building. In the century that followed, numerous renovations occurred along with the conversion of the building into a library for Special Collections. The grandeur and function of the original Reading Room were lost with the subdivision of the space into three distinct rooms for new purposes such as collections handling and staff administrative areas.

Cultural

STEINWAY HALLSteinway & Sons was founded in New York City in 1853 and the company has been manufacturing and showcasing pianos in the city ever since. It has a rich architectural history from its large factory in Queens to the Steinway Building on West 57th Street. The newest Steinway Hall is prominently located in the base of a modern limestone and steel high rise in midtown on Avenue of the Americas.

NEUE GALERIE NEW YORK

Selldorf Architects transformed a 1914 Carrere & Hastings building into the Neue Galerie New York. The design mandate called for an intimate setting in which to view a diverse collection of fine and decorative arts.

Residential

FIFTH AVENUE APARTMENT

This apartment in a pre-war building was a full scale interior renovation combining two apartments into a two bedroom, and increasing the space by one third. The result was a spacious living room with floor-to-ceiling windows and connecting kitchen and dining, creating a loft-like open atmosphere in the central space. The private master bedroom and bathrooms are closed off by a glass door.

Commercial

347 BOWERYLocated on the Bowery between East 3rd and 4th Streets, this new 13 story residential tower is comprised of a two story commercial base with living units above. The expansive glass storefront in the base continues the neighborhood pedestrian retail scale while the set-back upper floors have dramatic south and west facing views across Lower Manhattan.
